Enchanted Portals, a 2D platformer featuring a vintage art style from developer and publisher Xixo Games Studio, has released a new trailer confirming it will officially launch on September 6th, 2023. Today’s trailer features gameplay that exclusively consists of a single boss battle against the “Princess Frog”.
According to the official Perp Games page, Enchanted Portals will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. But today’s trailer includes “footage captured on PC”, and you can wishlist it on Steam now. You can watch the full release date trailer on publisher Perp Games’ YouTube channel:
Enchanted Portals is destined for comparison to Cuphead because of its art design, which is also reminiscent of early animation. That may prove a little unfortunate, since the target audience likely includes a lot of nostalgic Cuphead fans, and their expectations will be high.
Cuphead has been unanimously acclaimed, and only just released special physical editions at the end of last year, despite launching back in 2017.
However, Enchanted Portals doesn’t really have the run-and-gun style or frantic pacing. Instead, today’s boss fight seems a little friendlier. It features either solo or co-op mode, the latter of which is on display in the new trailer.
According to the Steam page, Enchanted Portals will try to distinguish itself with a wide range of spells and special moves, as well as status effects to contend with like jump restriction or losing the ability to attack.
Also, the story focuses on rookie magicians Bobby and Penny, who must fight their way back to their own dimension and reclaim a Magic Book. This is more kid friendly than Cuphead’s premise, which involved casinos and the devil. And although the animation a bit stiff, the imagery is actually decent and should satiate fans who want more vintage cartoon action.
