NBA 2K24, the latest installment in the long-running sports series from developer Visual Concepts and publisher 2K Games, has just released a new official gameplay trailer. While today’s trailer is mostly cinematic, it also has footage taken from a variety of real NBA games.

This includes a side-by-side comparison to tease the upcoming “ProPLAY” feature. The game’s official website teases this new technology for the series will be groundbreaking, because it “directly translates NBA footage into NBA 2K24 gameplay”.

NBA 2K24 is currently slated to launch on September 8th, 2023. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. You can watch today’s new trailer on the game’s official YouTube channel:

Today’s trailer also teases the 25th anniversary edition, which fans can pre-order and will be available until September 10th. This special edition comes with a 12-month League Pass subscription.

The NBA 2K franchise is constantly churning out sequels, but although many have been divisive, it’s always a relief for sports fans when the series musters a gem. Ideally, NBA 2K24 will introduce enough features and improvements to distinguish itself, especially since Kobe Bryant is at the forefront of this installment.

Today’s trailer concentrates a lot on ProPLAY, and the commitment to authenticity is certainly a nice gesture. The resulting animation will feel more immersive, and it’s also going to capture more personality from the featured star athletes. The 2K franchise thrives on realism, so this should be a good step forward.

However, it may not be quite as revolutionary as the devs might have hoped. Many of the issues with the series aren’t so cosmetic. Fans are likely hoping for the gameplay content itself to address quality of life and central mechanics to create a smoother, memorable experience. Either way, today’s footage does impress, and there’s still plenty of time to learn more ahead of launch.
