Critter Cove, a relaxing open world life sim from developer Gentleman Rat and publisher tinyBuild, has just revealed a new gameplay overview trailer. The footage delves into island exploration, crafting, animal villagers, and more.

The new trailer coincides with Steam Closed Beta sign-ups becoming available today. According to a new tweet from tinyBuild, the Steam Closed Beta will begin in September, and a demo is coming to Gamescom next week.

Critter Cove is currently expected to launch into Early Access later this year in Q4, with console ports coming later on. Today’s trailer teases a PlayStation and Xbox version. You can watch the new overview trailer on tinyBuild’s YouTube channel:

Critter Cove is one of many in a saturated genre, with farming, anthropomorphic animals, breezy exploration and a cute aesthetic. Its central premise is about rebuilding a tropical island town from the ground up, then improving it through renovating buildings and even repurposing trash.

In this way, it partly resembles Dolphin Spirit – Ocean Mission, which is due to release in late September. However, Critter Cove doesn’t have the environmental or academic approach, with well-researched information. This could make it more accessible, though less distinguishable. It clearly has a bigger budget, with polished graphics, but less cultural influence.

Instead, Critter Cove will probably play closer to the likes of Animal Crossing, meeting villagers and decorating. But the world of Critter Cove also seems very large, and the underwater exploration should be a real highlight. The incorporation of the sea is very appealing. There are plenty of reasons to roam around, in search of “relics, blueprints, and shipwrecked critters”.

Overall, Critter Cove seems to be very charming, colorful, and full of content, if not a whole lot of personality. Players might find a similar experience in the vibrant and friendly MMO Palia, which also started its own Closed Beta a couple of weeks ago.
