Skull and Bones, the troubled pirate adventure game from Ubisoft, has released a new trailer for the PC Closed Beta that is set for August 25th through August 28th, 2023. Announced in June, invited fans can participate in the Closed Beta via Ubisoft Connect.

An official blog posted today has revealed even more details. The Closed Beta will let players explore the Red Isle and the coast of Africa, and they can level up their character to the Buccaneer Infamy Tier. Players can also try out the main campaign contracts, up to “Exterminate the Rat”.

Skull and Bones still doesn’t have a release date, but it will be available on PC, Luna, PlayStation and Xbox. You can watch the new Closed Beta teaser on the Ubisoft YouTube channel:

Skull and Bones has been relatively quiet and often delayed, so Ubisoft is surely hoping the Closed Beta will introduce some strong word of mouth. Skull and Bones first revealed gameplay last year, showcasing key mechanics like ship management, contracts, and elements of survival.

Skull and Bones has struggled to truly distinguish itself, particularly against Ubisoft’s own Assassin’s Creed franchise, and it’ll be important to see how players respond to the Closed Beta.

It seems like they’ll get access to a decent amount of content, and hopefully the variety of factions and narrative themes that players will encounter are going to add more flavor. Growing your infamy, accumulating riches, and changing alliances have the potential to be pretty fun.

Surprisingly, today’s trailer is mostly cinematic, and simply doesn’t introduce anything fresh, as opposed to previous trailers. As a result, it seems like more of an obligatory reminder for players from marketing. It would’ve been beneficial to showcase footage of what players will get access to.
