Minicology, a sci-fi sandbox adventure from indie developer Isaac Denner and publisher Iceberg Interactive, has just released an official gameplay overview trailer. It sets up the premise about procedurally generated tiny planets, as well as key mechanics like base building, crafting, and exploring the universe.
Minicology is currently expected to launch in 2024, but a release date has not been confirmed. It will be available on PC via Steam, and there’s currently no word on support for other platforms. You can watch today’s overview trailer on the Iceberg Interactive YouTube channel:
The art design for Minicology boasts one of the most adorable blends of sci-fi and survival. Minicology’s universe is full of color and imagination, with an illustrated feel that resembles childhood artwork, though very detailed and thoughtful.
However, it hasn’t disregarded realism altogether. The Steam page mentions that “each planet type has unique simulated weather and event rotations”.
This indie has some aspects of No Man’s Sky or even Astroneer, which recently added Custom Games last month. Minicology features procedural generation, and a scientific approach. It focuses on sci-fi tech, terraforming whole planets, discovering resources and traveling space in search of new worlds.
But Minicology is also full of a variety of inventive little creatures, and players will need to defend against enemy invasions. You can use traditional combat, create weather, automate turrets, or even use chemistry against invaders.
While it’s ambitious for Minicology to pursue so many different mechanics, today’s trailer looks very encouraging that it will excel at them all. With eight unique boss battles, hunting and farming, weather events and a day/night cycle, the balance between familiar mechanics and creative twists should be enough to please fans of the genre.
