A wealth of fresh details concerning Ubisoft’s forthcoming installment in the long-running franchise, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, has been revealed in a recent behind-the-scenes trailer. The trailer, which provides an enlightening peek into the making of the game, has furnished fans with deeper insights into the title, expected to launch on October 12, 2023, across various platforms including Xbox Series, Xbox One, PlayStation 4/5, EPIC, PC, and Amazon Luna.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage, in a fresh turn of narrative, introduces a new protagonist, Basim. Basim’s character is fashioned as a sharp-witted street thief who becomes embroiled in a larger narrative and an ancient organization that alters his fate in ways beyond his wildest dreams. As players, we are thrust into the role of Basim, exploring his transformation into a master assassin in the game set in ninth-century Baghdad – three centuries prior to the timeline of Altair.

The development team’s focus, as articulated in the trailer, was to delve into the original essence of the franchise while creating an experience that feels modern and fresh. This involved the introduction of rhythm mechanics, revisiting old gameplays, and paying tribute to iconic narrative elements and imagery that made the franchise so beloved.
Mirage has consciously made an effort to root itself in the elements that define the assassin experience. One key pillar is the focus on parkour, particularly emphasizing fluidity and comfort, reminiscent of the Ezio games’ design principles. To make Basim’s movement across the urban environment feel natural and fast, the team has incorporated animation improvements, leading to a more dynamic gameplay experience.
In addition to parkour, the other core focus of Mirage is stealth. The game encourages players to operate from the shadows, planning their next moves, striking and disappearing without a trace. Several assassination moves and animations from previous games make a return, promising a robust stealth experience.
The gameplay also sees the re-introduction of social stealth mechanics. Players can blend into crowds or bribe factions to traverse unnoticed through bustling locations. The gameplay also introduces an improved enemy AI that’s more responsive, and a wider array of enemy archetypes to further challenge players.
The game’s mission structure also gets a refresh with the Hidden Ones establishing bureaus across the city, which serve as gameplay hubs. These bureaus offer side contracts with diverse objectives ranging from rescue missions to assassinations. The game also brings a new investigation board, replacing the quest log in Mirage, and offers more freedom to players in planning their key assassination missions.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a heartfelt homage to the roots of the franchise, led by a team that holds the essence of the Assassin experience dear. The team’s passion shines through in the trailer as they unveil their vision for the game and share their excitement for the upcoming launch. To top it all off, the game also includes a nostalgic visual filter option reminiscent of the first Assassin’s Creed game’s desaturated blue-gray color palette, a fitting tribute to the beginnings of the series.
Ubisoft is set to reveal more about Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Basim’s journey in the coming months, promising an intriguing storyline and thrilling gameplay that will surely excite both new players and long-time fans of the franchise.
