Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the next big installment in the hit historical action franchise from Ubisoft, has just released a brand-new gameplay trailer focusing on the protagonist Basim. The trailer includes new cinematics, details, and mechanics. However, the new gameplay is still considered a work in progress.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is currently set to launch on October 12th, 2023. It will be available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Luna. You can watch today’s new Basim trailer on the Ubisoft YouTube channel:
Today’s new trailer has quite a few nuggets of info, beginning with Basim’s backstory. Fans learn about Nehal, Basim’s best friend and partner in thievery, and there’s also a glimpse of Basim’s terrifying visions. However, the most fascinating reveals were the gameplay reveals.
It turns out that Assassin’s Creed Mirage won’t use XP, instead opting to weave the narrative directly into player progression. You’ll need to rank up in the Brotherhood for new “missions, outfits and tools”.
This approach is a smart way to reduce the grind. Assassin’s Creed is full of side quests, many of which simply amount to gathering resources. Directly tying progression into the story is definitely going to ramp up the pace of Mirage, without sacrificing the freedom to explore altogether.
Players will need to unlock new tools, all of which are briefly showcased in today’s trailer. The choice to unlock these in any order still gives players a path for their preferred playstyle.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage also does a great deal of homage. Like the History of Baghdad feature revealed earlier this week, the addition of outfit dye is a good way to incorporate nostalgia alongside evolution. Unfortunately, the Assassin Focus mechanic doesn’t get much attention, and it’s still unclear what the limits are.
