There was once a time when text-based titles dominated the internet, with players’ imaginations getting ahead of what was possible in gaming at the time. However, there have been new attempts to revamp the genre, with the new text-based adventure [I] doesn’t exist announcing that it will be released on Sept. 12, in just over three weeks.
In the short release trailer revealed earlier today, players get a brief introduction to the character and scenario they’ll be introduced to at the start of the game. They’ll input simple commands in a method that looks similar to a PC input screen. While the trailer starts with beautiful scenery, it quickly changes as the player character has an existential crisis about being controlled by the player.
Update Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. PT: An updated email was sent out this afternoon that corrected the release date, which has been reflected in the article.
There is also a mushroom and what appears to be some kind of 3D space that the player will need to interact with in the game. With the game being primarily billed as a text-based adventure, it’s interesting to see the trailer showcase some settings outside of that genre. Developer LUAL Games has given credit to titles like The Beginner’s Guide, Stories Untold, and Zork as important inspirations.
[I] doesn’t exist is expected to release on Sept. 12, 2023, on Steam, with players able to try out a demo or wishlist the game on the store page.
