One of the significant enhancements in Starfield is the revamped character generation system. Bethesda has incorporated data from a wide range of scanned faces of varying age groups and ethnicities. The result is an intricate system that allows players to create incredibly detailed and diverse characters. This very system is also employed to generate all characters and NPCs in the game, enabling the possibility for players to create a character resembling anyone they encounter in the game.

The character creation begins as if players are sifting through employee records, choosing from 40 presets as a starting point. The journey henceforth can be as detailed or swift as the player desires. With a multitude of options for facial morphs, dermaesthetics, make up, blemishes, scars, piercings, and teeth settings, players can get as close as possible to their envisioned character.

However, character creation extends beyond the physical appearance; it is where players begin to define their character’s persona. This is achieved through the introduction of backgrounds, which offer a backstory and initialize players with three basic skills. The game has creatively incorporated backgrounds into gameplay where certain situations may benefit from a player’s background.

For further customization, players can select up to three traits. Each trait comes with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. For instance, one can choose the “biggest fan” trait, where a fan joins the player’s crew and offers gifts. However, this comes at the expense of the fan’s incessant commentary. Similarly, the “kid stuff” trait requires players to support their in-game parents financially, but it also provides opportunities to engage in heartwarming interactions with them. There are numerous other traits with their unique narrative and gameplay implications.

In addition, players who wish to remove a trait will have options to do so, with the details being left for players to discover in-game.
