In a recent discussion with IGN, Bethesda’s Todd Howard verified that the upcoming Starfield game will operate at 30 FPS on both Xbox Series X and S. The frame rate decision was made in an attempt to guarantee a consistent performance across these platforms.
Howard detailed that Starfield would run at 4K resolution on the Xbox Series X and 1440p on the Xbox Series S, but emphasized that the game’s frame rate would be capped at 30 FPS on consoles. This decision is driven by the desire to maintain the rich detail and dynamic nature of the game’s expansive open world without any sacrifices.

“The aim has always been to create these immense, fully dynamic and detailed open worlds where anything can happen,” Howard explained. He mentioned that Starfield would often run well above the set 30 FPS, occasionally reaching up to 60 FPS. However, for the sake of consistency, the team chose to limit the frame rate on consoles. This approach is intended to allow players to fully immerse themselves in the game without having to consider performance fluctuation.
Howard expressed satisfaction with the game’s performance and feel, even in heated battle scenarios. The decision to cap the frame rate, he noted, provides necessary headroom for the unpredictable and dynamic elements of the game.

“In our games, really anything can happen,” he stated, indicating that maintaining the unique experiences that make Bethesda games stand out was a key factor in the decision to lock the frame rate.
