The open-world survival genre has become a mainstay in gaming over the last decade, branching off into subgenres like horror, multiplayer, and sci-fi. Goose Byte is a Canadian developer founded in 2021 and has now announced it will be entering the survival-crafting genre with its debut title: The Signal.

In the reveal trailer shown below, Goose Byte reveals a good look at the basic scenario of The Signal, with players crash-landing on an unknown planet after Earth is pushed beyond its brink. What follows is an adventure through the wide world as a group of characters works to craft completely custom bases and cars. Near the end, they’re drawn to a large laser shooting into the sky.

The Signal is a third-person multiplayer open-world title that will encourage players to explore their creativity over approaching the world with violence. The title is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 for consoles and PC, with there being an in-game ability to create and share recipes with other users. This paired with the game’s attitude toward sustainability is why the developer believes it’s set apart from the genre.

While it’s only set on one open-world planet, it is reminiscent of titles like No Man’s Sky and similar titles that have been released in recent years. The crafting and invention aspect does seem to provide a lot more freedom than done in previous titles and that could prove to be something working in Goose Byte’s favor.
