Earlier this year, Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, revealed that the 2020 best-selling comic book Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is being adapted into a third-person action RPG by an unnamed studio. Rosen further disclosed that this new TMNT game will be an ambitious AAA title inspired by Sony’s God of War.
In an unexpected turn of events, THQ Nordic has officially announced that they are the publisher for the TMNT: The Last Ronin video game adaptation. It was also revealed that this new project is being developed in collaboration with Nickelodeon and Black Forest and will launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The revelation came with the release of the first trailer for the title during the recent Digital Showcase event hosted by the Austrian video game publisher.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is originally a five-issue miniseries published in 2020. Set in the TMNT universe’s future, the story of Last Ronin follows a lone surviving Turtle who embarks on a courageous quest for justice in a war-ravaged New York City.
Unlike recent TMNT games where players usually control all four turtles, TMNT: The Last Ronin appears to offer a different experience with a focus on single-player gameplay. However, Rosen previously disclosed that other characters may appear in flashback sequences, similar to the structure of the comic series. The core gameplay will likely center around the mysterious last surviving Turtle. Faithfully adapting the source material, The Last Ronin is also set to introduce a mature and darker take on the beloved TMNT franchise.
